WHY YOU SHOULD SPONSOR THE STONEWALL BAR ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA, INC.

SBA was established in 1995 as a coalition of attorneys, judges, law students, paralegals, and other legal professionals to utilize their professional expertise to support the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and to oppose discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. A voluntary bar association, consisting of almost 300 dues-paying members, SBA publishes an on-line directory of attorneys who who are willing to serve and be responsive to the needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients. The organization also publishes a monthly newsletter that is emailed to 800 legal professionals, provides scholarships to law students, conducts continuing education for attorneys, and creates opportunities for networking with judges and other legal professionals. As a sponsor, we will recognize you not only at the Awards Dinner (through the dinner program, signage and special name tags), but throughout the coming year, including your logo on our website and in our electronic monthly newsletters, from November 2013 through October 2014. Your sponsorship will also provide you with significant exposure as a supporter of our community and of the principle of diversity in the legal profession and the larger society.

This year, our sponsors have enabled us to continue to offer important and relevant educational programming to both lawyers and laypersons, complete the fourth year of our mentoring program, and award three scholarships to law students to attend the Lavender Law Conference and Career Fair sponsored by the National LGBT Bar Association. SBA joined an amicus brief in Hollingsworth v. Perry, the recent Proposition 8 case before the Supreme Court, and an amicus brief in two Ninth Circuit cases challenging same-sex marriage bans in Nevada (Sevcik v. Sandoval) and Hawaii (Jackson v. Abercrombie). SBA also united with a coalition of organizations to support the “Every Child Deserves a Family Act,” reintroduced by Representative John Lewis, to ensure that all families are respected, loved, and celebrated – including families with parents who are LGBT.

SBA was honored for its work in 2013 by being nominated by the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce for its “Guardian Angel” award and received the State Bar of Georgia’s 2013 Award of Merit in the category of Local and Voluntary Bar Activities. With your help, we can continue our commitment to quality programming, education, and engaged action.
